Étoiles distantes, route of exhibitions and events designed and initiated by the Frac des Pays de le Loire with the complicity of partners in the Region.

With its new Nantes site, the FRAC continues its essential missions of clearing up artistic scenes, supporting creation and building up a network of territories. To inaugurate this place, the Frac is setting up a new project around emergence.

The Pays de la Loire region trains and attracts many artists every year. It is by relying on a generation who graduated between 2013 and 2018, some of whom trained in fine arts schools in the region, others located in the region and attentive to its dynamism, that this exhibition project is being built. For an extended resonance, we nevertheless wanted to open this project to a national stage, to allow for the setting up of cross-dynamics, wider visibilities of the project, and thus to stimulate a network of artists who radiate and can embody a generation without specific anchoring.

This project is set up this year with the collaboration for the pre-selection of files, of two teachers from the École des beaux-arts de Nantes Saint-Nazaire (Michel Aubry, artist and Marion Daniel, art critic), two teachers from TALM Angers (Vanessa Theodoropoulou, art critic and Jacqui Riva, artist), Franck Balland (curator and independent art critic), and for the Frac, Laurence Gateau, Director and Vanina Andréani responsible of the Collection-Exhibition Pole. Romain Bobichon, Kim Farkas, Camille Juthier, Aurélie Ferruel and Florentine Guédon & Camille Dumond were thus selected by the jury for the Frac exhibition in Nantes with an echo in Carquefou. Flora Bouteille is invited in this context to perform a scheduled performance at the Lieu Unique.

Constellation "Etoiles distantes" in region

For the first edition of a project that the FRAC wishes to renew every two years, the desire is to involve partner locations in the region. A course designed at the scale of the territory in order to offer the public a panorama of young creation. From the jury’s preselection, each associated structure invited an artist of its choice. Les Moulins de Paillard in Poncé-sur-le-Loir: Clémence de Montgolfier, Salle Martel in Challans: Julie Bonnaud and Fabien Leplae, Gallery 5 in Angers: François Dufeil. The MAT in Montrelais invites Aurélie Ferruel & Florentine Guédon to echo their Nantes project.

A few words from Franck Balland, associate curator (FR)

 S’il existe un exercice délicat parmi l’ensemble de ceux communément requis pour donner naissance à une exposition collective, celui consistant à produire un « instantané » d’une scène contemporaine se distingue par son aspect nécessairement subjectif, et de fait forcément incomplet. Cette situation initiale n’en reste pas moins privilégiée pour prendre la mesure de ce qui se joue, dans la complexité même de l’époque, pour des artistes ne partageant ni tout à fait le même horizon, ni tout à fait les mêmes problématiques plastiques ou conceptuelles. Bien que l’exposition Étoiles distantes tire son titre d’un roman éponyme de l’auteur chilien Roberto Bolaño (1953 – 2003), elle ne lui emprunte ni ses fondements historiques, ni la noirceur de son intrigue. D’échos plus lointains, elle lui doit peut-être une certaine idée du rôle de la création dans un environnement cerné par le chaos, ou encore une forme d’obsession poétique et politique que nourrissent une constellation d’êtres animé·e·s par une volonté de changement.

À Nantes et en région, ces expositions rendent compte de la pluralité de ces regards posés sur le monde. Sans pour autant suivre une ligne théorique ou formelle qui en déterminerait la tonalité particulière, celles-ci sont parcourues des mêmes préoccupations, espoirs et revendications qui traversent, aujourd’hui peut-être un peu plus qu’avant, la société dans son ensemble. C’est cependant par le prisme de chacune de ces propositions, formulées dans une gamme de médiums allant de la peinture à la performance en passant par l’installation vidéo, que se livrent quelques unes de leurs manières d’être au présent. En filigrane de ce rapprochement d’individualités et de pratiques distinctes, se pose donc la question de ce que pourrait révéler, à l’aune de ces temps troublés, cet agencement de perspectives singulières. Si certaines prises de positions, en particulier politiques, ont largement animé le débat artistique ces dernières années, elles s’incarnent désormais dans des œuvres dont le propos éclaire tout autant qu’il bouleverse nos représentations du présent. Favorisant certains régimes d’attention, de disponibilité et d’engagement, cette exposition fait apparaître une multitude d’attitudes, qui sans surplomb signalent l’émergence de nouvelles manières de penser, et d’agir, avec l’art contemporain.
