This catalog was published on the occasion of the exhibition by Julien Laforge and Raphaël Ilias, Tenir l’écart, as part of Instantanés (95), room Mario Toran, in Carquefou from October 25, 2017 to January 21, 2018.
Keeping the gap is the culmination of a round trip: selected to take part in an artistic exchange between Yucatán and the Pays de la Loire, Raphaël Ilias and Julien Laforge were hosted in residence at the Cúpula, a cultural center located in Mérida, from January 13 to March 13, 2016. Back in Carquefou, the two artists present a set of works that owe as much to their stay in Yucatan as to the interval between their residency and the exhibition.
Julien Laforge has been interested for several years in work environments and the gestures they elicit, from which he willingly borrows forms and materials.
Raphaël Ilias focuses his practice around the relationship between the sound phenomenon and space, how the latter imprints its shape on the sounds that pass through it and how sounds provide information about the space from which they originate.
